When you're just getting started as an entrepreneur, it can feel like you're juggling a million things at once, tools, strategies, client outreach, social media, marketing and finances. It's no wonder the whole process gets overwhelming fast. And guess what? Even seasoned entrepreneurs feel this way. The chaos doesn't magically disappear with time, but our relationship with it can change.
I want to talk to you about something that every single entrepreneur faces but not enough people talk about honestly: setbacks.
Let’s keep it real; entrepreneurship is not a straight line. It’s a roller coaster filled with high highs and low lows. There are days when everything clicks, and then there are days when you’re ready to close your laptop and pretend the whole “being your own boss” thing was a weird dream.
But here’s the truth: setbacks are not failures. They’re fuel.
Shift Your Perspective | Reframing Your Mindset as an Entrepreneur
The first step to turning setbacks into fuel is changing the way you look at them. A setback isn’t a sign that you’re not cut out for this. It’s an opportunity to pause, reflect, and reevaluate.
If something didn’t work, whether it’s a launch, a post that didn’t get engagement, or a sales call that flopped, it doesn’t mean you didn’t work. It just means there's something to learn. That’s powerful.
The Numbers Don’t Define You
Let’s say you launched a podcast and only five people downloaded it. You might feel discouraged, like no one cares. But let’s flip that. Five people took time out of their day to listen to you. That’s not nothing. That’s a start. And all success stories start small.
We often compare our beginning to someone else’s middle, or their curated Instagram highlight reel. But real growth is slow. It’s gritty. And it doesn’t look like perfection.
Normalize the Struggle
Let’s normalize the off days, the overwhelm, the doubts. Because they will come. Some days your kid is home sick, your house is a mess, you’re running on no sleep, and that client you really wanted says no. That’s life. That’s business. And you are not failing because of it.
You’re showing up. You’re doing the work. And that matters.
Practical Tips to Get Through a Setback that Will Help you Reframe your Mindset
Reflect without judgment. When things feel like they’re spiraling, step away. Write your thoughts down. Talk it out. Record a voice memo to yourself. Get it out of your head so you can process what’s really going on.
Ask what’s really behind the feeling. Are you tired? Burnt out? Comparing yourself to someone else? Is it really failure or just frustration?
Compete with yesterday’s version of you. That “no” you got? Let it fuel your next pitch. That post that flopped? Learn from it. Everything is data.
Lean into your why. Even when people say, “don’t think about your why,” I say do it. Reconnect with what made you start this journey. That passion? It’s still there. Feed it.
You’re Doing the Thing
Let’s be clear: showing up imperfectly is still showing up. You don’t need the perfect feed, the biggest audience, or a full client roster to call yourself a business owner. You’re already doing the thing. And that’s enough.
So, keep going. Take the setback, feel the feelings, and then use that energy to push forward. Reflect. Reframe. Rise again. Your future clients, your community, and most importantly YOU deserve it.
